Palo Alto Networks PA-Series (hardware) lifecycle status — the real story

Palo Alto Networks PA-Series is the hardware under PAN-OS: the physical firewall appliances (PA-200 through the PA-7000 chassis and the PA-5450), the Panorama M-Series management appliances and the WF-500 WildFire private-cloud appliance. Cycles on this page are appliance models or series, so it is the hardware companion to the PAN-OS software page: the exploited CVEs that put PAN-OS in CISA's KEV catalog are software CVEs and are tracked there, but they run on these boxes, and a box whose last supported PAN-OS release is itself end-of-life cannot be patched out of them. Every date here is taken from Palo Alto Networks' own Hardware End-of-Life Dates page (public, no login) and re-checked at every build. Field mapping: support is the end of standard support where the vendor states one, otherwise the end-of-sale date; eol is the hardware end-of-life date; extended support is marked available where the vendor lists Extended Support: Until Hardware EOL; release dates are not published on that page.

The near-term cliffs. PA-220 standard support ended August 27, 2025 and the hardware reaches end of life on January 31, 2028; the ruggedised PA-220R shares the same standard-support end and runs to January 31, 2030. The PA-3200 Series and PA-5200 Series left sale on August 31, 2023 and reach hardware end of life on August 31, 2028, with standard support ending May 3, 2027 (PA-3200) and May 2, 2027 (PA-5200). The PA-800 Series (PA-820, PA-850) left sale on August 31, 2024 and ends on August 31, 2029. The PA-7000 Series chassis generation left sale on December 31, 2025 and reaches end of life on December 31, 2030. The newest announcement is the PA-5450 Series: end of sale November 22, 2026, standard support until July 30, 2029, hardware end of life November 21, 2031.

Already past hardware end of life: the PA-3000 Series on October 31, 2024, the PA-5000 Series on January 31, 2024, the PA-200 and PA-500 on October 31, 2023, the K2-Series (PA-5280-K2, PA-7050-K2, PA-7080-K2) on February 28, 2026, the Panorama M-500 on February 28, 2025 and the M-100 on October 31, 2023, plus the PA-2000 and PA-4000 generations of 2020 and 2019. The vendor's recommended replacements are recorded per cycle (PA-400 and PA-500 series for the small boxes, PA-1400 for the PA-800 and older mid-range, PA-3400 for the PA-3000 and PA-3200, PA-5400 and PA-5500 for the PA-5000 and PA-5200, PA-7500 or PA-5450 for the PA-7000, M-300 and M-700 for Panorama). Under CISA BOD 26-02 a firewall past hardware end of life is an end-of-support device regardless of which PAN-OS release it happens to be running.

Scope: the vendor page also lists PA-7000 line cards and management cards, transceivers, disk pairs, the ION SD-WAN appliances (Prisma SD-WAN), the GP-100 and the LightCyber Magna appliances; those are not included here. Panorama M-200 and M-600 (end of sale February 15, 2024, end of life February 15, 2029) and the WF-500 (end of sale December 31, 2023, end of life December 31, 2028) are included because they are part of the same management and inspection plane.

Palo Alto Networks PA-Series (hardware) release and support pattern

Of the 18 release lines tracked, 9 are past end of life and 9 are still within support. The next scheduled end of life is PA-220 on January 31, 2028 — 515 days from this build. The longest-supported line currently published is PA-5450 Series, to November 21, 2031.

Computed from the tracked release data at every build — the figures above are the dates in the table, restated, not an editorial estimate.

What does Palo Alto Networks PA-Series (hardware) end of life mean for your organization?

When a version of Palo Alto Networks PA-Series (hardware) reaches end of life, the maintainers stop issuing security patches. Vulnerabilities discovered after this date are publicly disclosed on the National Vulnerability Database, exploit code appears on GitHub, and your systems remain permanently exposed.

The CVE blind spot: Most vulnerability scanners check for known CVEs but do not flag the accumulation of unpatched vulnerabilities in EOL software. With a zero-day, nobody knows about the vulnerability. With EOL software, the vulnerability is public — listed, rated, and often weaponized — but no patch will ever exist. This is the most dangerous gap in enterprise security posture.

Organizations running EOL Palo Alto Networks PA-Series (hardware) should treat it as a vulnerability class in their risk register, apply compensating controls (network segmentation, enhanced monitoring, access restriction), and prioritize migration to a supported version.

Your options when Palo Alto Networks PA-Series (hardware) reaches end of life

There are four realistic paths. Which one is right depends far more on how long the system needs to keep running than on the version you are on today.

OptionBest whenWatch out for
Move to a supported version The system will outlive the current version's support window and you can schedule the work Budget for compatibility testing, not just the upgrade itself — that is where the real cost sits
Replace the component The project is unmaintained, or a better-supported alternative exists The replacement has its own lifecycle and its own end-of-life date — you are changing vendors, not escaping the problem
Buy extended support Migration is genuinely underway but cannot finish before the deadline, or the workload is frozen by certification or a third-party application A bridge, not a destination — every year purchased is a year the migration still has to happen
Document accepted risk The system is isolated, short-lived, or scheduled for retirement Only defensible with real compensating controls and a written decision — auditors treat undocumented end-of-life software as a finding

How to choose, in one question: how many more years does this system need to run? Under a year, extended support (where it exists) is usually cheaper than an emergency migration. One to three years, migrate — support purchased repeatedly costs more than doing the project once, and the project only gets harder as the version ages. Indefinitely, migrate now and plan the next migration before it surprises you.

Worth saying plainly, because vendors selling extended support rarely will: extended support is often the more expensive choice over a multi-year horizon. It is the right answer when a deadline is genuinely unreachable, not as a default. Compare the annual fee against the one-time cost of migrating before committing to either.

Extended Support Options

If you cannot migrate immediately, extended support vendors provide continued security patches for EOL Palo Alto Networks PA-Series (hardware) versions. This is a bridge, not a permanent solution — plan your migration in parallel.
